"I
believe the people who buy my art would like to know me and
I like to add the element of a personal encounter to
my work. I enjoy being able to share my ideas and
methods. Often, the person who wanders in provides
exactly the reaction I need to help me complete a
painting."

Sugarstone Studio moved to its location on
Old South Gaylord
Street in August, 1999, after a two-year search. The
following year, and again in 2001, Betty was
chosen "Poster Artist" for the Annual
Gaylord Street Memorial
Weekend Festivals by the Old South Gaylord
Street Merchant's Association.

The
choice of neighborhood was no
accident. Old South Gaylord Street is
a city block that has a real sense of
community. Sunset magazine describes
it as "an urban
oasis where holidays find residents
celebrating together . . . It's the kind of
neighborly neighborhood you
almost don't find anymore - except in
Frank Capra films".
Individual shops specialize in books,
Balinese imports, custom
framing, French pastries, coffee,
homemade ice cream, fly fishing
needs, wine accessories, men's and
women's clothing, even specialty tandem
bikes. |
Gaylord
Street is also home to an optician, a plumber, hairdressers, a florist, interior designers,
realtors, a dentist, a
masseuse, a landscaper and six local restaurants. It's
a place where neighbors know the merchants and enjoy
strolling with their dogs, who enjoy the water bowls set out
by shop keepers.
Sugarstone
Studio fits in perfectly; and Brandy, Betty's resident miniature poodle, cheerfully greets people any time
she is
working. The appeal of this hard-to-find lifestyle was
a perfect fit for Betty and offers a unique and friendly
concept. As Betty says, "After trudging through
three feet of snow with my easel and paints on my back, or
painting on a 90-degree summer day, this is easy.
After all, it's heated!"
